Wine Review - 2009 Reserva De Peron Torrontes: This One Has Its Ups and Downs

This wine is a very reasonably priced white from Argentina. It is another example of the Torrontes grape at comes in at $12 locally. We previously reviewed a Torrontes from Michael Torino (click here to view that one).  Based upon that review we see a lot of similarities between the version but some key differences as well.

The similarities come in the look of the wine.  It is a very light and bright wine with a clear and almost green hue.  Reminiscent of Vinho Verde from Portugal to a certain extent but with a little Sauv Blanc thrown in there for good measure.  It is an attractive looking wine.

On the nose there is also commonalities between the two with some perfumed floral notes but with a layer of soft sweetness in there as well.  A nice smelling wine indeed.

The taste is where this one differs.  It is a much drier version compared to the Torino.  It has a crispness to it that is again Sauv Blanc-like.  It would make a nice patio wine for sure on a warm summers day.  It paired well with the Lobster Risotto we had for dinner as well.  The wine's crispness cut through the fat and richness of the lobster.  Yet another great pairing. There is one shortcoming in the palate which is the finish. It drops off with a bitter note right at the end which doesn't give you the best feel once the crisp fruitiness has passed.

   Tasting Notes: Score:
Sight (0-5) Light Greenish tint, clear and bright 4.0
Smell (0-5) Perfumed nose with a crisp clean hint of passionfruit and honeysuckle 4.0
Taste (0-10) Crips wine with a dry start and a slightly bitter finish.   7.0
  Total: 15.0 / 20
 (75.0%)

We netted this one out at the same score as the Torino mainly because we like them about the same. Great price and great value but we just need to wait until the patios open.
Keep on drinking!
