They make one of our go-to wines in their Cabernet Franc and their Unanime Red is amazing but this Cabernet Sauvignon is also a standout. We particularly like red with both body and balance and this wine delivers that in spades. As it is an Argentinian wine from the Mendoza it has those notes of a good purple wine. Whether steak or tapas this wine will hold up to bold flavours. It looks like Malbec but definitely smells like Cab Sauv.

Sticking your nose in the glass you are immediately hit with violets, toasted oak and blackberries. Bold and balanced.

Their Pinot Gris is well made and perfectly suited to the food one might eat when in New Zealand but for that matter pretty much anywhere. This Pinot Gris would pair perfectly with a ton of seafood or poultry dishes but is just as easy drinking on a sunny patio with some charcuterie and all the fixin's.

The wine has a slight straw coloured hue to it but doesn't move into a particularly yellow colour which is interesting in comparison to its Italian Pinot Grigio cousins. It is surprisingly thick in the glass to the point of having some syrupy sensations as you taste it. At 13.0% one might think the alcohol / acid in there would thin that out but that's not the case.

The nose is pure honey. There are very subtle notes of lemongrass and lychee in there but those are shoved aside pretty quickly for more honey. The interesting part is that the sweet nose does not really carry through to the palate.

The acid from the fruit and alcohol is the first thing that hits the tongue and then the syrupy mouthfeel follows right behind it. The saline notes of beach rock and flint are right there as well to support the grapefruit and star fruit flavours that coat the tongue. If you've ever had Ting the Jamaican soft drink, it's like that minus the sugar and fizz. Quite refreshing for a thicker white wine.

We received the Üllo Wine Purifier from the manufacturer to review last year and it has taken us literally this long to get ourselves sorted out to write this Blog post. We planned to do a video post and all kinds of other fancy stuff but here we are.

Apologies to all involved for the massive delay.

Without further adieu, here's our review of the Üllo based upon tasting a 2016 Dominio de Heredia Rioja that has and has not passed through the filter.

As background, the premise of the purifier is the use of a food grade polymer filter to take sulfites out of wine. This can be beneficial to those with sensitivities to sulfites in wine and it applies to white and red wine. Üllo can optionally act as an aerator as the wine passes through it. If you turn the bottom of the filtration unit it can be set to add air or not. The Üllo retails for about $70 US ($100 CDN) and comes with four filters in the package and additional filters can be purchased in a 15 pack for about $40 US. It can be purchased at a variety of retailers like Williams Sonoma and Crate & Barrel as well as online at Amazon.

We figured that a Rioja was a good wine to leverage for testing a wine filter. Not because there are a huge amount of sulfites but with the oak it would be a little easier to see if there are changes to the smells and flavours in the wine. To see if there was a difference, we poured a small amount into a small non-wine glass and then filtered the same amount through the Üllo to taste the differences.

While we weren't skeptical that there would be a difference, we were interested to see the depth of the difference. Well, no sense in wasting time, there is a huge difference between the two samples especially in the aromas right out of the gate.

The nose on the non-filtered wine is nutty oak with a heavy vanilla undertone whereas the filtered version has more berries showing through and the toasted oak becomes more licorice and cocoa. That's an immediate difference side by side with no delay once the wine is filtered. Very interesting.

The tannins also change immediately with what would be considered a fairly tight wine opens instantly with the Üllo. Some of that might be the aeration but the speed of the change is interesting so we would attribute some of that to the filter. We don't have a sensitivity to sulfites that we're aware of but regardless there is a major change that happens to the wine with the Üllo that softens the edges and, in this case, improves the tastes.

We didn't try using a decanter to compare the aeration aspect but it certainly wouldn't be a bad idea. Is it the sulfites removal that adds a huge difference to the flavour profile or is it the aeration itself? That might be our next experiment but as of now this is an impressive first try.

Keep on tasting!
But Not Wine....NEVER!We have to admit to having missed this on CollegeHumor.com but it is a good one. The gist is that wine experts are faking it and can't tell anything more about wine than anyone else. For the most part we agree with that statement. Wine is a highly complex and subjective thing and in no way do we consider ourselves experts in what's right for someone else. Everyone likes what they like and Chris learned that lesson firsthand at a recent holiday party where he tried to "show" someone why a particular wine was lesser than others.

Boy, was that a bad idea and really stupid to boot.

Who the hell are we to tell anyone that something is not as good as something else? It is UNFUSSYwine.com after all, right? Lesson firmly learned and wine snobbery has been banished from the kingdom yet again. Regardless, a video is a good reminder to leave the superiority complex at the door and just enjoy the damn wine.

Give it a watch, it is good humor.
The Holiday Season is upon us and we have been having some great wines this December. Including a lovely 2009 Etude Pinot Noir with Christmas Dinner. As part of our celebrations we received from Lakeview Wine Co. a Mommy Mix Gift Pack which contains a bottle of 2011 EastDell Cuvée Brut and a bottle of 2016 Lakeview Vidal Icewine (plus a two bottle winebad to boot). It would make a great gift for New Years or anytime frankly and certainly doesn't need to be limited to Mommy's but hey let's give Mommies their due. Lakeview Wine Co. is based in Niagara-On-The-Lake (NOTL), Ontario which is one of our favorite wine regions to visit. This area is very popular as a wine destination in Canada but is still a hidden gem for many wine lovers.

Now to the wines...

We started our meal of turkey leftovers with the 2011 EastDell Cuvée Brut is a blend of Pinot Noir (55%) and Chardonnay made in the Traditional Method. The nose on the wine is very fresh with a bright citrus nose which opens the sinuses. The smells are pear and peach with a layer lemon zest. The bubbly has a lively effervescence to it and it is very pale yellow in the flute. On the palate the wine has strong pear and apple notes with a slightly yeasty note at the mid-palate and a very, very clean finish. It was a really nice sparking wine and as a dry wine the flavours are soft and the acid crisp but refreshing. This is a well made sparkler and would make a great addition to any New Years Eve party and at just under $25 it punches well above it's weight. Very high quality work here in the fields and in the winery.
We are not huge dessert wine drinkers as a rule but this wine WAS dessert tonight. As one would expect from an Icewine it was syrupy and thick in the glass but not overly so (thinner than maple syrup for sure). This version was also quite pale and not a golden colour as some might expect. Call it a slightly lighter version of an Icewine which can vary greatly in both viscosity and colour, like most wines. There are strong notes of honey, apricot and gooseberry on the nose with the start of a smell of lychee fruit that follows quickly on the palate. This is a dead giveaway for this being a Vidal Icewine. The sugar is high as one would imagine but there is some baked apple in there and a hint of acid at the finish which takes this away from being the one note of sweetness and really makes this a winner. This required a couple of tastings to really pick up all the notes but the lychee and a pronounced Welch's white grape juice flavour part way through make this quite nice as a meal finisher. It would also be great on Ice Cream were one so inclined.
Previous seasons had comedian Sean Cullen as host. We particularly enjoyed the comments in the YouTube episodes from folks who were the opposite of unfussy about their wines and Sean's hosting ability. Some people sure are funny, especially Sean Cullen, for the record. It epitomizes the problem with pretentious wine people. Puke...

This season's host James Chatto does an admirable but predictable job with managing the wine tastings but there's little in terms of spark or pure entertainment. The Wine Academy in Toronto is the location of the series and it looks absolutely stunning. Give this season a watch when you get the chance. It was excellent to see the wines chosen and how the experts did. It's a fun exercise for your own wine tasting parties as well.
We have built a Wine Blog and a Brand around tasting wines and scoring them. There is a lot of legitimate points here, but fundamentally the scoring should never be the focus. It is an aspect of what we taste but we are not you nor do we have your palate. You might love Sauternes or have a passion for Sparkling Wine and we respect these wines immensely and will drink these wines regularly but we would be hard pressed to present either as 100 point wines because our palates aren't shaped to "love" these wines blindly. We will like them, maybe even a lot, but our personal preference and biases will always play a role in how we score something.

Now, we tend to be fairly hard-minded when it comes to scoring wines so if we do score it in the 90's it's really something special in our minds. Typically, for us, a wine registers in the 80's most times but that is OUR take on things. We agree in principal with Whitney that the score from Wine Spectator or some other body is just a guide as is our scoring, but you need some yardstick to say that this wine is good, great, or awful to US (PS - very few wines are awful). If you taste 10 wines, which one did you like the best? Guess what, you just scored that wine anecdotally. It's human nature.

Back to Whitney's argument... She's right, the score doesn't matter and wine makers should never chase scores as it's a fool journey. It's great to get a score in today's wine world but here's the thing, if you make the best wine you can to match the terrior of your vineyard, good things will happen. Getting marketers (like Chris) involved in the wine making process just mucks it up. The wines should speak for themselves and THEN let the marketers get involved... :)

The scores and medals will come. Until then, we'll try to provide context to the wines we taste which will sometimes include a score.

We are way past being on task with posting but here's a new one for your reading pleasure. We've had a couple of Niagara wines this week and this one is the latest from Vintage Ink Wines.

The wine is medium in body which has a slight transparency to it. It has a slightly crimson colour with a hint of mahogany at the edges. The legs are very slow in the glass and make it seem like a thick wine which it isn't.

The nose is plummy with a hint of raspberries and toasted oak. It is a very nice smelling wine but not really that complex. There are some volatile alcohol notes that make the wine seem to smell a bit medicinal but not in a bad way.

The medicinal notes carry over to the flavor profile but again not in a bad way. It doesn't have the barnyard nature we love from Niagara wines but it tastes pretty good. It is a tart and tannic wine that comes across as slightly thin which makes sense given the transparent nature of the wine. The notes of sour cherry and black currants are the dominant flavours which make for a tasty wine. We like it. We know it's not estate made but it tastes alright. We freely admit we have a soft spot for Ontario wine.
So our posting habits are sorely lacking these days. We have been doing a lot more social media posting than we have blogging. Some of that is no time to sit and write and some of that is pure laziness. Either way if you follow this Blog we apologize for the lack of action.

On to the wine...

We love the value that Chilean wines bring to the table. Great wines at great price points. Carménère, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabs, and Chards are all good from Chile. Chile has a number of wine regions in the country and this wine hails from the Cachapoal Valley which is a region we are not that familiar with. Regardless, this is a great wine.

The wine is very bright purple in the glass. Reminiscent of Carménère in colour there is a very slow journey of the legs rolling down the glass. This makes you think that it would be syrupy but it really isn't. The interesting visual is a clear halo around the edge of the glass. A very unique wine visual and kinda cool.

The nose is super oaky and hot which to say it has a bit of a punch you in the face bouquet. That gets followed up with blueberries and a faint barnyard sensation which we like. It is super interesting though the hotness is just a bit much. We'd prefer a slap to a punch.

The flavors are pure Chilean wine in our minds. Deep and round tannins that enhance a very dry wine. Back to the boxing reference, this wine punches above its weight. It is a well balanced wine with not too much heat or acidity and some elegance in the mouth. Add in black currents and blackberries with the oaky undertones and it is a great tasting wine. Really unique and tasty.
The QPR on this wine is really high with a $19 price point locally. We've notice that the local stores have picked up Vina La Rosa's Carménère. So that popped on to the radar just now.
We have been following the Brown Bag Wine Tasting series regularly. William Shatner is a Canadian legend/hero/genius and on and on it goes and for him to do a wine tasting series in this format is amazing. So awesome and if you only watch the episode below you are really missing out. One of the unique parts of the show is he asks guests to describe wines without using wine lingo and using words from the guests area of expertise. You'll see what we mean in the episode.

His guest below Ray Isle is the Executive Wine Editor for Food & Wine and also the co-host of a PBS show that we REALLY loved called Vine Talk. If you've never watched THAT series you are also missing out. Ray co-hosted with Stanley Tucci and it is a really cool look at wine and wine tasting with some famous guests (but that's another post for another day).

Other than being an entertaining episode in general, Ray talks about tasting wine recovered from a Civil War era ship off of Bermuda that he considers to be one of the worst things he ever tasted. We'll let him tell you the rest. Give it a watch and then go back into the episode guide and watch the rest and then go watch all the episodes of Vine Talk.
We had this wine many years ago when we lived in the US and we remember enjoying it. From Bodegas Borsao and the Campo de Borja region, this is a 60% Garnacha, 20% Tempranillo, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon blend which has been aged in oak for at least 8 months and then bottle aged for an additional 14 months. It is this patience before going to market that makes this such a good wine.

A medium bodied wine with deep purple colouring it certainly is showing it's age with some nice mahogany edges. It looks really great and cascades down the glass in a sheet. Extremely nice looking wine especially after a swirl.

Chocolate AND vanilla bean hit you immediately when you stick your nose right in there. That is quickly followed by plums and some toasty oak notes. A solid bouquet that makes one think the wine is earthier than it is but very nice.

There are cherries and a recurrence of the chocolate on the palate but this time there is a nuttiness in the wine as opposed to vanilla notes from the nose. This wine is very close to having a great balance but the mid-point tannins are a touch bitter. That said there is a nice strong espresso finish that lingers on the tongue. Nice drinking wine and without the bitter mid-palate it would have pushed it from being a good to a great wine.
This is a $18.50 wine locally and that feels like a good price point. We're no wine makers but if that bitterness was toned down just a bit this wine would have been fantastic.
This movie has been on our radar for a long time. It originally came out in 2012 on the festival circuit in the US. Nearly immediately it gained a cult following from wine enthusiasts for a couple of reasons. First, there are few really strong documentaries about tasting wine out there. Second, the reputation and mystery surrounding the Court of Master Sommelier exam and how hard it actually is.

If you've never heard of this exam this movie will get you up to speed fast and it delivers a strong explanation of the requirements to take the tests and what it means to truly prepare for all aspects but especially the dreaded/beloved Tasting Exam. The shear volume of information that needs to be consumed and remembered is astounding. The theory test covers wine, spirits, beers, and cigars from around the World. There is the tasting exam and finally a formal dinner service to go through.

If you have an interest in tasting wine and have ever tried doing a true blind tasting where you need to determine the wine down to the most specific detail, this will be an interesting watch. The MS's that put the candidates through their paces are tough but they know what it is like to complete the journey. You can only take the test once a year so if you fail (and the vast majority do) you need to begin your preparations for the next test immediately. It's a full time job unto itself. Unbelievable!

There have been 219 Master Sommeliers since its inception and it is considered one of the hardest tests there is. The worst part in the tasting exam is that they never tell you what the wines were so you go through it and it is pass/fail, Terrible. The pressure leading up to the test must be immense and watching the different personalities go through the process is super cool to watch.

We found the film was able to balance the overview of the test and the drama around it with the discussion of the people taking the test. There is an element of education that the film had to do for those uninformed about the test but it is reasonable and we found it extremely fascinating as wine people. Definitely a good watch.

The characters of the test takers was all over the road from Ian the 'A' type personality, to Dustin the 'jock', to Dlynn the 'gentleman'. They were thick as thieves but each person brought a unique spin on their motivation and preparation for the test. More curious was the spouses who have to put up with marathon quiz sessions and wine tastings with the requisite spit buckets left behind. Really very interesting.

The bottom line is if you are interested in wine as a hobby (or as a profession) this movie will entertain. We're sorry it took us so long to watch it and have heard a follow up is in the works which we would love to watch. We give it two thumbs up!

Keep on tasting,
Benjamin Bridge just launched the 2013 vintage of their Nova 7 and we thought it was time we get this review out. The popularity and hype around Nova 7 is well deserved as it is a great wine year after year. It certainly isn't for everyone but it does have a wide appeal with its slight effervescence and off-dry nature. It's the aromatics of the Muscat that make this wine stand out. It is a great cool climate white wine and is consistently a well made wine.

The 2012 has a very reddish golden hue and it starts bordering on Rose in terms of colour. As expected it has a slight sparkle to it and feels a little bit syrupy on the swirl. Quite interesting in the glass.

That all too familiar lychee fruit nose stands out but has some other notes under the covers as well. Pears, peaches, and even mint make an appearance which is wonderful. Another stand out smelling Nova 7.

While not our normal style of wine or preference you cannot deny that this wine is good. The lower alcohol (7%) and sugar make this a great drinking wine and would pair well with planked salmon or grilled shrimp. It has a crisp pear start and a very honeyed finish. The quality shines through with the good amount of acid has comes through on the mid-palate. We'd call it more off-dry than sweet and it certainly has a Riesling quality to it. Mixed in there is a hint of candied lemon peel and maybe a touch of that mint again.
The market has accepted that Nova 7 is a $25 wine and really we can't argue. We simply need more nice weather to make us go out and get the 2013, Congrats on the new vintage Benjamin Bridge.
New Zealand was the first table we visited at the 2014 NSLC Port of Wines Festival so our palates were fresh. We have had good luck with Stoneleigh Wines and this one truly delivers. The price point for Kiwi wines was a bit higher than in previous years but the quality of wines were very high. Both the whites and the reds were very solid across the board. This wine however, was a stand out among them. It is not a typical NZ Pinot Noir in many respects but holds true to the region in others. The one adjective that stands out for this wine overall is "Elegance". There is a refinement that other Pinot Noirs just don't have.

In the glass the most noticeable variance from typical is that the wine, though still quite light, is a much darker purple on the colour wheel. The wine remains watery and this looking as one might expect but if the picture does it any justice at all it should the purple that you can see.

The nose is full of strawberry jelly and raisins. It holds a very full bodied nose and is not at all grassy as we might see from a 'typical' version of the grape. Layered under that are cloves and vanilla that make this a really nice wine to smell. In a blind tasting we think this wine might trip up some talented sniffers with the unconventional smells.

The elegance truly shines on the tongue where the strawberries continue and the tasting is much more Pinot Noir with a thin mouthfeel. The tongue coating nature is an interesting spin and is followed by an earthy mid-palate. All along the wine remains balanced with a beautiful and extended finish. Juicy and luscious are what we get and we love it,
This is a $30 Pinot Noir locally and it is worth that price, no doubt. It's not often we get unique and elegant wrapped up into one and it is awesome.
As we go through our roster of wines from the 2014 NSLC Port of Wines Festival we get to try wines that stood out on the day. The Italian table was a bit of a hit and miss group of wines wrapped up with a lot of really nice but expensive Amarones and Barolos. This Sicilian wine came in at the middle of our price point at $21.79 which is a little high for Nero d'Avola but this is a nice wine. According to Wikipedia this grape is the most important grape for the island at the tip of the boot of Italy.

In the glass this wine is a lighter bodied red which is typical of this grape. It is very purple in colour and in the glass you see it has a slight transparency for a darker red. Again this is typical of the grape.

The nose is very smokey and has a strong leather sensation when you breathe deeply. There is a very plummy undertone to things and it makes it an enticing smell. Really quite nice.

Nero has Pinot Noir tendencies and this wine lives up to that and is quite thin on the palate. It is also very dry and very tannic which really hits us in the mouth in the right way. The tannins also turn what would normally be plum notes into plum skin notes. The pucker is full on with this wine and it is quite tasty with not so much balance but mouth watering flavours.

Tasting Notes:

Score:

Sight (0-5)

Lighter bodied and transparent for a darker red wine.

4.0

Smell (0-5)

Smokey nose with leather and plums.

4.25

Taste (0-10)

Mouth watering wine with strong tannins and a very dry profile with plum skin notes.

8.25

Total:

16.5 / 20 (82.5%)

As we mentioned at just over $21 this is a somewhat pricey Nero. We have had quality versions for probably $5 - $7 less. That said it is a solid wine and it is a perfect pairing with spaghetti or pizza but works well on its own.

Keep on tasting!
This is yet another selection from the 2014 NSLC Port of Wines Festival. We didn't get to a lot of the Australia table overall but there were some highlights and we felt like this wine was one of them. Australia gets a lot of attention during the show with very drinkable and palate friendly wines but for a few years we didn't feel like they deserved the hype. We found a lot of over ripe and hot wines with too much jam in their reds and over-oaked whites. We think Aussie wineries are getting the message that some jam and oak are great but too much doesn't keep people coming back for more.

This Cabernet has a deep purple verging on black colour in the glass.
The wine is very thick in the glass though the legs on the swirl are super speedy. It looks like a rich, thick luscious wine.

The nose on this wine is pure strawberry jam. We're wary of that jam smell but it is combined with blackberries and black cherries and is quite attractive. There is a clean smell to the wine where the alcohol freshens the nose. Finally there is an oak component that rounds out the smells in the glass.

As for flavours we found that jam again but you know what it's not bad. Shiraz takes that jam sweetness and structure a bit more readily than Cabernet but it's okay. It is slightly sweet at the start but the familiar essence of Cabernet comes through pretty quickly. The violets and vanilla hit your tongue on the mid-palate and it definitely has a tongue coating finish that walks up to being bitter but stays just on the right side of bold.

Tasting Notes:

Score:

Sight (0-5)

Deep purple verging on black with a thickness and speedy legs in the glass.

4.0

Smell (0-5)

Strawberry Jam combined with blackberries and black cherries with a clean and oaky finish.

4.0

Taste (0-10)

Jammy for a Cab with a sweet start and a violets and vanilla mid-palate and a bold and tongue coating finish.

8.0

Total:

16 / 20 (80%)

At $21 we feel like this is just a hair high for the price. It's tasty but if it were $17 or $18 we would say no question it's a buy. Good to drink on it's own but that jamminess makes it a less food friendly than we would expect from a Cab.

Keep on tasting!
