Wine Review - 2010 Gaspereau Vineyard L'Acadie Blanc: If this is Nova Scotia Wine, Consider Us Fans!

Note: 2010 Label is different
Gaspereau Vineyards just outside Wolfville, NS is one of our favorite local wineries. Simply put, they make great wine.

This wine is made of Nova Scotia's signature grape L'Acadie Blanc.  As a cool climate grape it resembles Sauvignon Blanc in many ways.  They are both crisp whites with notes of pear and they normally don't see oak.

This version of L'Acadie Blanc is a nice easy drinking white wine.  The 2010 vintage was the best in recent history for Nova Scotia wines with a great Summer and extended Fall growing season.  Overall, it really does have an appealing flavour profile with a Poached Pear nose with Lemon Zest tucked in there.  In the glass it is a clean and brilliant coloured wine that shows there was no oak involved as there is an almost green tinge to the wine.

On the palate it has a little sugar to start which is fine, but there is a second there on the mid-palate where this wine is in perfect (and we do mean perfect) balance.  The sugar, acidity, and weight are all in harmony and this wine shines.  The trouble is, it doesn't last through to the finish.  The wine just falls off a bit at the end with a little more astringency than we would like.  That does not take away from the taste it just doesn't make the wine perfect

We have to say this wine is really, really nice.  It has a bit more body to it than Sauv Blanc but it still retains the crispness and fruit notes we would expect and enjoy.  Though it is predominantly Pear versus say, more tropical flavours for NZ Sauv Blanc, all in all we are proud to say this is a local wine.

   Tasting Notes: Score:
Sight (0-5) Light wine with green notes in the glass.  Good looking wine. 4.0
Smell (0-5) Poached Pear with Lemon Zest, a little sweet and a little tart. 4.0
Taste (0-10) Starts sweeter than we would like, has a perfect mid-palate and finishes with just a touch of astringency.  If the mid-palate carried through to the end it would be a champion white wine. 8.5
  Total: 16.5 / 20
 (82.5%)

This is a little heavier than a typical Sauv Blanc but just by a hair.  It is definitely a nice wine for a warm day but certainly holds up to a winter's evening with spicy Korean Noodle Soup.

Well done Gaspereau, well done....

Keep on drinking!

Chris & Shannon
