Wine Review - 2007 Kim Crawford Dry Riesling: Not as dry as we expected but still good

So, this was a sale table purchase and a good one at that.  This is a $23 wine locally and we got it for $16.  We have tried the Kim Crawford Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc and have been very pleased with those, so we figured we would give this NZ Dry Riesling a try.  Now, as we have stated in the past our white wine knowledge could use a boost and neither one of us could remember the last time we had a Dry Riesling so we went with some pre-conceived notions of Riesling in general but the minds were certainly open.

In the glass this wine looks like a Riesling (Surprise!), but the nose was all minerality.  This wine smelled like someone poured honey all over beach rocks and then dipped them in lemon juice.  Crazy nose and crazy good.

So, when we tasted it we were thinking Dry Riesling would be heavy on the dry part.  Not so.  Now, to be fair, this wine is absolutely drier than any Riesling we have ever had but it still has a sweeter flavour profile.  Maybe 2.5 to 3 on the sweetness scale instead of 4 for regular Riesling.  The minerality and citrus carried through to the taste as well.  So, it really tasted like it smelled...honey soaked beach rocks.  We had it with Thai food which is a great pairing.  The acidity in the wine cut through the spice nicely.  We really liked the flinty tastes that the wine had and it is a super unique wine.  The good news is we purchased another Dry Riesling at the same time from a different producer so more on that compare and contrast later in the week.

   Tasting Notes: Score:
Sight (0-5) Pale colour with slight golden hue. 3.5
Smell (0-5) Very mineral smell with citrus and honey, some tropical fruit notes.  4.5
Taste (0-10) Tastes a lot like it smells with a flinty taste and citrus carried through.  Though a Dry Riesling still has the Riesling residual sugar.  Tasty.   8.0
  Total: 16.0 / 20
 (80.0)

Final thoughts: Crisp, acidic white with some sweetness and lots of minerality. We are looking forward to trying our other version later this week.

Keep on drinking!

Chris & Shannon
