Blue Fish Pinot Grigio Wine Review

So. it's Saturday night and Morgan has done his eating for this evening and we figured it would be a good opportunity to do a quick wine tasting with our dinner.  We started with a good ol' New Orleans Boiled Shrimp and finished with Scallops poached in the Shrimp Boil liquid and Squash Risotto.  Since we were having something a little spicy we figured something with a bit of residual sugar might work and we were right.

We were provided this wine earlier in the Summer and had wanted to try it when the weather was warmer but it was a nice day so all good.  This is a German Pinot Grigio and we were fairly certain that it would be on the off-dry end of the spectrum and that was perfect with dinner.

In the glass the wine looks quite clear and it portrays itself as being a crisp looking wine and overall that kind of holds up.  There are bubbles in the glass as well.  We kind of like some of these off-dry whites to have a little spritz in there.  It adds a nice dimension to the wines with just a hint of fizz.  Nice looking white wine that has a tradition pale yellow colour.

We may be a little rusty at this but this wine has a fairly complex nose with definite citrus notes almost a marmalade nose.  Really nice, kind of crisp but kind of sweet.  Maybe a little apple thrown in there for good measure.  It adds a nice aspect to a wine that we would consider very easy drinking.

The flavours on this wine are really quite nice and actually there is an acidity that makes this wine quite mouth-watering.  The slight effervescence and crisp acidity makes the tasting experience a really nice one.  Apples and peaches are the first thing that hits the palate but some interesting finishing flavours of maybe some stealy or flinty notes.  When those flinty notes are combined with the bubbles it almost like putting your tongue on a 9 Volt battery.  Really fun stuff.

   Tasting Notes: Score:
Sight (0-5)  Pale yellow wine with a slight effervescence with a crisp look. 4.0
Smell (0-5)  Citrus and marmalade hit you first, followed up with apples. 4.0
Taste (0-10)  Crisp acidity with bubbles makes for a great tasting experience where apples, peaches, and flint are in fairly good balance. 8.0
  Total: 16 / 20 (80.0%)

At $14 locally we feel like this is a really nice value and has a surprising level of complexity for this price point.  It was a perfect pairing with our dinner and it is worth a buy.

Keep on tasting!

Chris & Shannon
