Wine Review - 2008 Moi Negroamaro Del Salento: It Comes From Puglia...That's Right Puglia

Vigne & Vini Moi Negroamaro del Salento IGT
We had mushroom lasagna for dinner so we wanted an Italian red to have along side and this one was the only one we had in the rack, so.....winner.  This wine comes in at $17 locally from Cristall Wine Merchants but we think it was on sale when we bought it.

After a somewhat confusing online search for the winery we finally landed on the Wines of Puglia website.  The winery's website seems to have been forgotten by the company as the URL goes to an abandoned search page.  Either way, we now recall that the wine is made by the same folks who make the 12 e Mezzo wine which we reviewed last year.

We are looking at this wine in the glass and other than being quite dark it looks to be thicker than it is in the mouth.  It has some pretty slow legs in the glass when you swirl it.  It is a nice looking wine but really has a fairly normal garnet colour.

Gotta say, the nose on the wine is a bit of a disappointment.  We were expecting a bit more punch.  We didn't get it.  It is a little aromatically challenged with not a lot of richness to the smell.  It has some fruit but really it should have more going on to make it a better tasting experience.  The label says intense fragrances of fruit and spice but that doesn't line up with what we smell.  Maybe some cherries, maybe some cedar, but intense?  Not so much.

The taste of the wine is not too bad overall.  It has a combination of fruit and savory flavours but does not wow us with roundness or structure.  It finishes a little tart, but just a little bit.  We just don't get that gotta have another sip feeling from this one.  We don't dislike it per se, it just doesn't make for a memorable tasting.  Good....not great.  We can see this appealing to some people as it has a very straightforward flavour profile.  It has some acidity but it the mouthfeel just feels out of balance.  We would say sour cherry or blackberry as far as fruit is concerned.  If you know your cherries we would say more like Rainier cherries than say Bing cherries (don't worry, we looked it up).  It also has just a touch of herbaceous notes in there, maybe cilantro.  The complexity is not quite where we would like it to be but as a dinner wine, not unpleasant.

   Tasting Notes: Score:
Sight (0-5) Dark wine with a garnet colour which has some thickness, we call it normal red wine colour. 4.0
Smell (0-5) Some cherries and some cedar but it is definitely aromatically challenged. 3.5
Taste (0-10) Somewhat balanced wine with Rainier cherries and cilantro (yes, you read that right).  Some tartness but not a lot of complexity. 7.75
  Total: 15.25 / 20
 (76.25%)

We would like to give this a higher score because we didn't pay $17 for it, but we just can't get there.  If you can get this on sale it might be worth a try but don't expect too much.

Keep on tasting!

Chris & Shannon
