Wine Review - 2010 Vina Maipo Gran Devocion Carménère/Syrah: Fantastic Chilean Wine

Vina Maipo Carménère
We bought this wine at this year's Port of Wines Festival and we recalled it to be an amazing flavour profile and mouth feel.  We were right.  Thank you taste buds!

This wine from Vina Maipo is from the Maule Valley in Chile and is made from 75% Carménère and 25% Syrah and, let's get this out of the way now....is delicious!

In the glass this is a wine is extremely dark and that darkness is made up of that South American wine violet colour and is thick, really thick.  It hugs the glass and has very extended legs once you give it a swirl.  Nice looking wine.

The nose is rich and delicious.  There is a nice boldness to the wine which has notes of spicy cherries, leather, and tobacco.  The spice is like a white pepper which perks up the nose when you stick it in the glass and give it a whiff.  The fruit is there for sure, but there is an oaky backdrop that is awesome.

The taste is round and luscious with a lot of great notes cherries and toasted oak.  It is a very dry wine with lot of round tannins.  It does cross up on bitter at some points of the tongue but stays firmly planted in delicious.  The extended finish goes on and on and makes for a very nice tasting experience.

   Tasting Notes: Score:
Sight (0-5) Very dark and thick wine which hugs the glass. 4.0
Smell (0-5) Rich nose with lots of spicy cherries and oak with layers of tobacco and leather. 4.25
Taste (0-10) Luscious tasting wine with round tannins full of cherries and toasted oak.  Taste goes on and on. 8.25
  Total: 16.5 / 20 (82.5%)

Really great wine with a lot of bold flavours and smells.  Not for the faint of heart when it comes to red wine.  This is a big one but at $19 locally it is a fantastic value.  It tastes like it could be $35 and makes the Quality Price Ratio (QPR) pretty awesome.  This one is absolutely a buy recommendation.

Keep on tasting!
